Energy & mobility

Millions of East African bikes are going electric.

But who’s going to fix them?

1,000technicians trained where Uganda needs an estimated 500,000

The shift is one of the fastest on earth.

Uganda alone sold 30,000 electric bikes last year, accounting for 43% of all electric bikes in Africa.

Kenya has gone from 0.5% to 15% in the four years.

Rwanda has stopped licensing new petrol taxis entirely.

People keep expecting an EV revolution in cars.

But in East Africa, motorcycles are already leading it.

Now, the part nobody is thinking about.

Every one of those bikes will break down.

Batteries degrade. Controllers fail. Wiring frays on rough roads.

So two questions decide who wins the next decade:

Is there enough skilled labor to fix a completely new kind of machine?

Is there an independent aftermarket, the way there is for petrol bikes?

There isn’t.

Some estimates suggest that Uganda alone needs an estimated 500,000 technicians for its energy and mobility transition, but only about 1,000 are trained.

Beyond that, we need spare parts suppliers and repair networks.

This is the moment Ford created when he mass-produced the car. Ford built the cars, but the lasting fortunes were built underneath them: parts manufacturers, tool suppliers, and the mechanics every new driver eventually needed.

A whole industry was born from the gap around the machine.

East Africa is at that moment now.

First movers will take the repair layer too.

Spiro, Ampersand, and GOGO moved early and locked up the market.

The aftermarket is the next window. It is wide open, but it will not stay that way.

And you will not spot it from a dashboard at HQ.

You spot it when a rider says his bike has been dead for a week because no one nearby can fix it.

You hear it at the swap station.

You hear it on the ground.

That is where the next opportunity shows up first.

Before it becomes obvious.

Is East African mobility on your roadmap?
